Michael Ennis will oversee the Cronulla Sharks Pathways program after Craig Fitzgibbon’s approach

Craig Fitzgibbon has taken a huge step, luring 2016 Premier League winner Michael Ennis back to Cronulla to play a crucial role at the club.

Cronulla’s big finals hero of 2016, Michael Ennis, returns home to Shark Park after stepping down from his role as coach and advisor to the Parramatta Eels.

The Fox Sports star has accepted an offer from coach Craig Fitzgibbon to oversee the development of paths at the club’s elite junior academy aged 13-20.

He took on the role last week.

“It felt so good to put the Sharks shirt back on and drive through the gates,” said Ennis.

“I was very excited when Fitzy called to come back to the club that is so special to me.

“I’m really passionate about youth avenues and my job will be to ensure the Sharks’ youngsters have a healthy environment. I love watching kids and helping them achieve their NRL dreams.”

Ennis is one of the most respected young coaches in the game.

He helped Brad Arthur guide the Eels to last year’s Grand Final and before that he assisted Ricky Stuart to guide the Canberra Raiders to the 2019 decider.

“I spoke to Brad Arthur late last year,” Ennis said.

“I have explained that I cannot be a full-time assistant because of Fox Sports, where I have a job that I love.

“I could only be there as a consultant a few days a week.

“Then Fitzy called and I’m back with the Sharks.”

Ennis played 274 NRL games, including 51 in two seasons with the Sharks, where he signed from the Canterbury Bulldogs.

Fitzgibbon says it’s an important signing for the Sharks: “I’m delighted to have Mick on board.

“He was a Premiership winner here and since retiring he has been closely involved in the game through his Fox Sports commentary and as an NRL coaching advisor.

“Mick is a local with a keen interest in the Junior League and has a passion for coaching.

“Our young Pathway and Academy players will definitely benefit from his knowledge and experience.”
