A Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with rape after a woman reported being assaulted on a beach.

Laurence Knight, 33, has been suspended after a woman claimed she was raped in Brighton.

He was arrested by Sussex Police and later suspended by London Police.

The officer is accused of assaulting the woman off duty in July 2021.

Mr Knight is a sergeant with the Met Detention Unit and has been suspended from his post, the force confirmed.

With the Met’s reputation under scrutiny, Chief Superintendent Pete Gardner acknowledged there would be public concern about the investigation.

The senior officer in charge of Met Detention said: “We know people will be rightly concerned to hear of this very serious charge against an on-duty officer.

“We absolutely share this concern and I am grateful to Sussex Police for their thorough investigation and the ongoing professional support they are providing to the victim.

“The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is fully aware and cases of misconduct will be dealt with after the criminal case has been completed. The officer is suspended from duty.’

Scotland Yard said it has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The force will conduct an investigation into the officer’s wrongdoing.

A statement from Sussex Police said: “Sussex Police have arrested a man after a woman reported being raped on Brighton Beach on Saturday 17 July 2021.

“Laurence Knight, 33, a Met police officer, was arrested on July 28 on suspicion of rape and released on bail.

“On May 27 he was summoned to appear in Brighton Magistrates’ Court on June 23 to face a rape charge.

“The officer was not on duty at the time the complaint was made.

“The victim will continue to be assisted by specialized officers throughout the trial.”
