(CNN) – Facebook mother Meta said on Wednesday that it will recover former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks, just over two years later suspend him after the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
“Our purpose is that the risk [to public safety] declined sufficiently,” said Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, in a blog post. “As such, we will be reactivating Mr Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks. However, we are doing this with new guidelines to prevent repeat offenders.”
When his Facebook and Instagram accounts are reactivated, Trump will do so regain access to huge and powerful communications and fundraising platforms just as he ramps up his third White House bid.
The decision that comes on the heels of a similar movement Twitter, for example, could also further change the landscape of how a long list of smaller online platforms deal with Trump’s accounts.
It wasn’t immediately clear if Trump would jump at the opportunity to return to the meta platforms. Twitter reinstated Trump’s account in November following its takeover by billionaire Elon Musk, but the former president has yet to resume tweeting, opting instead to remain on his own social media platform, Truth Social.
But Trump’s campaign sent a letter to Meta earlier this month asking the company to declassify his Facebook account, a source familiar with the letter told CNN, making his return more likely.
Trump’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
