Meghan Markle threatened to dump Prince Harry if he doesn’t reveal their relationship to the world amid intense speculation, according to a new book.

The claim comes from an insider who says the ultimatum caused Harry to “freak out” and take action to try to protect his wife from public criticism.

The allegations are written in a forthcoming book, Courtiers: the Hidden Power Behind the Crown by Valentine Low, due out October 6.

The book, published in The Times, claims to detail aspects of Harry and Meghan’s relationship before they made it official in November 2016.

It tells how, before making a public statement, the couple were “faced with hordes of journalists” speculating about what had happened.

Meanwhile, Meghan told Harry that if he didn’t do anything, she would break up with him.

A source said: “She said, ‘If you don’t provide a statement confirming that I’m your girlfriend, I will break up with you.’

“Harry was panicking. Another source said, “He freaked out and said, ‘She’s gonna dump me.'”

Harry is said to have contacted Jason Knauf, Kensington Palace’s communications secretary at the time, to make the announcement.

The book tells how Harry called Knauf “to demand that he make a statement” that would confirm Meghan was his girlfriend and condemned the “racist and sexist undertones of some media coverage”.

It goes on to say that Meghan wanted protection from media intrusion into her privacy.

The book claims: “She said to Harry’s staff, ‘I know how the palace works. I know how this will turn out. You don’t care about the girlfriend.”

On November 6, 2016, Kensington Palace confirmed the relationship was official.

“Prince Harry is concerned for Ms Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he was unable to protect her,” the statement said.

“It’s not right that Ms. Markle is going through such a storm after a few months of being in a relationship with him. He knows commentators will say that “this is the price she has to pay” and that “it’s all part of the game”. He firmly disagrees.

“This isn’t a game — it’s her life and his.”
