A bodyguard pictured with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is a former Metropolitan Police officer who was convicted of choking his wife and leaving her “seconds from death”.
Pere Daobry, 51, was photographed driving Prince Harry and Meghan in a Range Rover as they left Frogmore Cottage en route to London’s Euston station.
News of his conviction will be embarrassing for the couple, who have worked to raise awareness of domestic violence through their Archewell Foundation.
The 6ft 7in bodybuilder was convicted in 2016 of assaulting his wife Sarah Jay, a former Essex Police Sergeant, after she declared she no longer loved him. She later killed himself due to post-traumatic stress disorder, describing him as a “maniac”.
A source told the Mail Online: “Considering how outspoken Meghan is on women’s issues, it’s quite amazing that a bodyguard with that kind of background was hired.”
In an interview following his sentencing, Ms Jay said: “When I met him, I was a strong, confident and capable woman. I could never have imagined becoming a victim of domestic violence. I was scared, isolated and had no one to turn to.’
Ms Jay – who had a daughter from a previous relationship – added: “I was seconds away from death, that scares me.”
Recalling the December 2015 incident, which began after an argument in her bedroom, she said: “I suggested he go to the gym to calm down and moved away to get away from him.
“He grabbed me. The next thing I remember was lying on my back. I was struggling to breathe. I could feel his anger. He had his hands around my neck and was choking me. All I could focus on was staying alive. I gasped for air, but couldn’t breathe. I realized that I needed to lie still and not fight and breathe through my nose. Trying to do that was the last thing I remember.’
Daobry denied the assault but was found guilty after a trial. Colchester judges dismissed his claim of using a police-approved stranglehold to prevent Ms Jay from taking a pill overdose at her home in Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex.
He received a 12-week suspended sentence for calling 999 himself.
Domestic violence activist David Challen said: “Daobry’s new role as the trusted protection officer for the Sussexes is nothing short of an insult to Sarah Jay’s memory”.
