A video of McDonald’s employees pouring soft drinks from bottles instead of soft taps has garnered more than 870,000 views on TikTok, where it has also sparked discussion about how widespread the practice is.
“Tell me your work is a slum without telling me your work is a slum,” reads the text overlay on the video. Video posted by @ronaldmcnuggets1 on Jan 2nd.
The video shows two employees using bottled soft drinks instead of the soft tap because it doesn’t function, a situation all too common in the fast food industry, according to the comments section. Many commenters have shared their own experiences when having to deliver soft drinks or being asked to run to the store to get a few liters of different soft drinks to meet the needs of customers when the machine needs to be serviced.
One commenter wrote: “I also do fast food and when we ran out of sweetener we had an employee run to a store (and) get bottled soft drinks to get us through the hours.
Some commenters debated whether customers could even tell the difference.
“I think (people) will notice it’s different because it won’t have the spice of a fountain,” one commenter wrote. “It would be different if it was Pepsi.”
Another commenter replied that the location of Carl’s Jr. Theirs has done this exactly in a week with no one wiser.
“They won’t,” the commenter wrote. “When I worked at Carl’s Jr, we did this for a week and no one noticed or even complained.”
The Daily Dot reached out to @ronaldmcnuggets1 via TikTok direct message and to McDonald’s via email to clarify its policy regarding freshwater fountain malfunctions.
