McDonald’s manager pretends the store is closed

TikToker share how their customer-facing workplaces manipulated conditions in their stores to get less work done after an alleged McDonald’s employee shared that the location she worked at “turned off the lights at night to make it look like it did.” leave” as if it were closed.
TikToker Liyah @beautyofliyah danced next to a point of sale while wearing a McDonald’s shirt and headset, while the text overlay on the video read, “I knew the McDonald’s I work at was a ghetto when the manager at night Turned off lights to make it look like we’re closing.”

Not only did the video garner over 150,000 views on the platform, but it also garnered a ton of discussion about customer deterrence tactics like these. Workers said their jobs did everything from lying to customers about their computers and ice machines to fibbing about which items were out of stock to scare customers away. Over at Taco Bell, an alleged manager said in a comment that they “only sell tacos after 1am.”
Over at Starbucks, according to multiple TikToks, a common tactic used by workers is to make items sold out on the app. A TikToker in July 2022 claimed that restaurant workers played “male screaming sound effects” to apparently get them to leave. Such tactics can also help workers when they are understaffed or dealing with a rush.
