McDonald’s Customer Films Store operates without workers

In a now-viral TikTok, a McDonald’s customer says she has to “order through a kiosk” at a McDonald’s location with no workers.

TikTok user @jbarbeezy posted the video on December 24th. In it she films what is behind the counter at a McDonald’s store and points out that there are no cashiers or workers in the kitchen. All you see is a drinks machine completing orders.

“Guys, you won’t believe it. You don’t even have anyone here. I had to order through a kiosk,” she says in the clip.

She also displays a sign that reads, “We apologize that cashiers are currently unavailable.”

“So there are no people working here, only machines. What’s going on?” she asks.

McDonald’s unveiled its first fully automated store in Texas this week, according to CBS News. The restaurant chain says the move is part of its plan to “create new ways of serving [customers] faster and easier than ever.”

Jbarbeezy’s video has reached over 301,000 views as of December 27th. In the comments, viewers were divided about McDonald’s new high-tech additions.

“Can’t wait for this to happen so everyone at McDonald’s could be like this,” wrote one user.

“I refuse to buy anything like that,” another pushed back.

Other users suggested that increasing automation in fast food restaurants is due to demands for higher wages.

“Yes, because some workers are asking to be paid like someone with a college or trade degree. This is supposed to be a temp, not a $50k career,” commented one viewer.

“There was an inevitable conclusion to the constant calls for wage increases,” wrote another.

“Looks like a $22 hour?” a third added.

The Daily Dot reached out to @jbarbeezy via Instagram direct message and email to McDonald’s.
