MBTA: Inquiry ongoing, driver ‘retrained’ after slow-speed crash on Green Line in June – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) — Pending an investigation, the MBTA train operator behind the wheel of a Green Line train that was accidentally coupled to another car went off plan during “retraining,” according to MBTA.

Video released by MBTA shows the vehicle slowly rolling into another train already occupying the railroad at Government Center Station. An MBTA employee attempts to warn the oncoming operator before walking away with his hands on his head as the two trains collide.

Hours after 7NEWS received video of various safety issues prompting a federal investigation, the MBTA Safety Committee reported that it is meeting deadlines set by the federal investigations to fix the transit system’s most pressing problems.

“We met with them closely,” said Ron Ester, MBTA’s chief safety officer.

In addition to the accident on the Green Line, issues with MBTA’s Red Line have prompted a re-examination of MBTA’s safety procedures.

Earlier this week, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren asked Federal Transit Administration Administrator Nuria Fernandez for answers about how the situation got so bad.

“How did we get to this place?” asked the impassioned Bay State Senator.

“Whether it’s the culture, whether it’s the making of decisions or lack of them that contributes to incidents that lead to death,” Fernandez said. “Then we raise the flag and go beyond raising the flag and step in.”

According to the MBTA, additional hires were made to help reverse service cuts prompted after federal investigators worked shifts for too long.

Transit passenger advocate Stacy Thompson blames the Baker administration for years of underfunding operating costs in the T.

“It’s really important that the public keep emphasizing that this is important to them … to remind the legislature, the governor and the incoming administration that we have to get it right,” Thompson said.
