MBTA Announces New Speed Limits on Red, Orange, Blue and Green Lines – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) – The MBTA on Thursday announced new speed limits on the red, orange, blue and green lines, effective immediately.

The restrictions will cap train speeds between 10 and 25 miles per hour based on the findings of a recent Department of Public Utilities visit on the Red Line between Ashmont and Savin Hill stations, according to the MBTA.

The MBTA said the speed limits would result in longer travel times.

“MBTA apologizes in advance for this inconvenience and remains committed to operating the shipping system as securely as possible,” MBTA said in a statement.

New speed limits follow shortly after the T announced a new slow zone report last month detailing existing restrictions.

The MBTA did not provide any further information Thursday night on the findings that led to its new speed limits, although officials plan to hold a news conference at 10 a.m. Friday.
