Mayor Jones offers encouragement during Girls Inc. visit

ST. LOUIS – Mayor Tishaura Jones spent part of her weekend visiting Girls Inc. in St. Louis, a nonprofit organization that provides educational and cultural programs in safe environments for girls.

During her visit, Jones shared some words of encouragement with young girls and insights into their humble beginnings, motherhood, and their appointment as St. Louis City’s first black mayor.

Mayor Jones also spoke of losing her first political race as mayor to prove that you can come back strong from any challenge.

“Politics kind of called me, and I answered the call,” Jones said. “Often when women run for office, it’s not something that we initially think of like, ‘I want to do this when I grow up.’ I’m here to tell you that the only qualification you need to be a politician is to care about your community.”

Jones previously served as Treasurer of the City of St. Louis from 2013 to 2021 and a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 2008 to 2013.
