real conversation. Tulsa King star Max Casella opened up about his pituitary dwarfism diagnosis – and how it kept him from reaching puberty until he was 27.
“I got testosterone,” says Casella, now 55 page six on Wednesday November 9th. “I was on growth hormone; I’m still on these things. My body didn’t go through the transition on its own.”
That Newsies star explained that because he was born with a “dysfunctional pituitary gland,” he was forced to “boost my own puberty” by being pumped “full of testosterone and growth hormone” in order to grow.
He remarked, “I was 25 and hadn’t even shaved.”
Pituitary dwarfism is when the pituitary gland fails to produce an adequate supply of growth hormone, which Johns Hopkins Medicine says is essential for normal child development — and is something Casella described as “a horror show.”
“I couldn’t talk about it. Nobody understood it,” he said page six On Wednesday. “It’s like the trans community today is talking about body dysmorphia and feeling ‘I’m in the wrong body,’ absolutely my experience. Absolutely. I was a man trapped in a little boy’s body for most of my 20’s until they finally pumped me full of testosterone.”
While the Washington DC native admitted that puberty delay allowed him to land roles meant for younger actors, he was cast as 16-year-old Vinnie Doogie Houser MD. at the age of 21 – it was still a challenge, especially at such an impressive age.
Now Casella is gearing up to star alongside her in Parmount+’s new series Tulsa King Sylvester Stallone. While Casella has acted in a variety of blockbuster films — including Newsies and Sergeant Bilkoin which he played opposite Christian Balle and Steve Martinor — the Good fight Alum still described working with Stallone, 76, as an “almost-st-in-the-pants moment.”
“I had his poster on my wall when I was 10 and now I’m playing with him? It’s surreal,” he gushed to Page Six. “I have played with many big stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp. Sometimes it’s up or down your experience with them, but nobody’s quite like Sly, who was such a superhero to my 10-year-old self. It was like my childhood dream.”
Despite his nervousness, Casella shared that his experience with the Rocky Stern couldn’t have been more pleasant. “I felt comfortable with him because I think he’s a worker at heart. He has a worker ethic and respects hard work,” he added.
