Arsenal’s Matt Turner has given Aaron Ramsdale another warning as he prepares to challenge him for the No 1 goalkeeper position.

The Gunners agreed to sign USA goaltender Turner from Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution in February and will join forces with his new teammates this month.

Turner, who was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year last season, has made 109 appearances for the New England Revolution and has 16 caps for the United States.

The 27-year-old will join Ramsdale and Bernd Leno as a senior goalkeeper in Mikel Arteta’s squad, although Germany goalkeeper Leno is expected to leave after losing his place in the squad.

Former Bournemouth and Sheffield United man Ramsdale has established himself as Arsenal’s best goalkeeper – he has put in a number of impressive performances last season following his £30m move last summer – but has drawn criticism from some , for bringing down opposing fans during matches.

Still, the 24-year-old is now pushing Everton’s Jordan Pickford for first place in England with the 2022 World Cup looming.

However, Turner believes he can do what Ramsdale did a year ago and make a big impact. He was asked about being a backup Keeper, he said Sky Sports: “I can understand why you rate it that way.

“Aaron has had a great season for Arsenal and has played well all year. I would agree with that for now. I’m coming to push him and become the best goalkeeper I can be while also making him the best goalkeeper he can be.

“That’s really my goal for everything… The DNA of this team is possession and I think that’s what they’re going to expect from me when I come on the pitch.

“It’s the area of my game that some call a weakness, but one where I’ve improved over the past few months. I’m connecting a few more passes, reading the game better and understanding how to hurt teams much better.

“We don’t play that [passing] New England style, but if I go with the national team, we do. When I’ve been with the national team for a longer period of time, I read the game better and do more passes.

“I look forward to being at Arsenal to do that every day rather than two or three weeks here or there.”
