A new series of Married At First Sight UK has begun – and there’s already plenty of awkwardness.
For the uninitiated, the E4 series does exactly what it says on the tin, with relationship experts matching people they find compatible before they first meet at the altar where they tie the knot.
When the new brides and grooms were introduced, Whitney Hughes, a St Albans assistant, admitted she had high expectations of her partner and described his physical attributes, including his muscular build and full beard.
She was partnered with Duka Cav, a human resource coordinator for recruitment Birmingham, and when he saw him at the altar he looked less than impressed.
“I wanted a man towering over me, like massive, like a brick house. It’s maybe a shed compared to a house,” she brutally assessed.
However, she added, “But there are no spots in his beard, so I’m not going to pat his beard.”
Things only got worse when Whitney told Duka, “I might be about to say the vows in between, or maybe, just like, run.”
Apparently without mince, she went on to explain, “This is the worst thing I’ve ever done in my damn life.”
Whitney also had a problem with the vows, which included mentions of love.
“You do not know me! It’s a bit strange to say that, isn’t it?’ she asked while Duka urged, “Just go with it.”
Whitney’s words left Duka’s family unimpressed – but he’s determined to break down their walls and make the marriage work.
Viewers were also disgusted by Whitney’s behavior and one said: “Christ Whitney is amazing. She must have known what she would do/say as part of the show. How disrespectful to Duka.”
“I can’t handle this woman. There is absolutely no reason to be so rude. Duka is so pleasant and polite and she’s just so embarrassed,” said another.
Another added: “This was actually disgusting behavior. If that’s how you feel, why are you there?
Elsewhere, Jordan and Emmett-Connelly and Chanita seemed to be off to a much better start, seeming to hit it off like a house on fire.
Last year’s series was E4’s biggest original program ever, so fans are sure to be watching in droves.
To see their partners for the first time on their wedding day, the couples, along with returning experts Melanie Schilling, Paul C. Brunson and Charlene Douglas, will forge a lifelong bond at a glamorous ceremony.
After the celebrations are over, their love is really put to the test as they embark on a luxurious honeymoon before moving in with each other and other couples.
Relationships are scrutinized by fellow brides and grooms at weekly dinner parties, as well as by experts at recurring commitment ceremonies where couples decide whether to stay or walk out of the process.
All of this will lead to a dramatic series finale in which each couple must decide whether to re-bond with their partner or go their separate ways.
So… no pressure.
Married At First Sight UK continues on Monday at 9pm on E4.
