Steve Davis believes Mark Williams still has a chance in his World Snooker Championship semi-final against Judd Trump, but everything has to go his way in the second two sessions after losing the first 7-1.

It was a disastrous start to the game for the three-time world champion as he struggled with the conditions and failed to break from 50 over the eight frames.

Trump was good without being sensational, making five half centuries as he extended the imposing lead in the race to 17.

The 47-year-old needs to improve dramatically on the form he showed on Thursday to stand a chance of winning the game, but Davis believes it could happen and Trump could potentially lose focus after taking a huge lead built.

With three sessions to go and the six-time world champion still believes things can change for the Welshman, although it will be difficult.

“It’s really a shock that Mark has gotten out of hand. I think we all expected him to continue the form. He’s experienced enough for that,” Davis said on the BBC.

“It just shows what happens in a session Snooker when one person escapes the other.

“The other then staggers and has to wait until the session is over to mentally regroup.

“There is a possibility that the roles will be reversed. It’s unlikely, but sometimes it happens.

“It’s hard for the crowd to understand that a guy can be so good to get to 7-1 and then completely collapse. But it’s a bit like the long-distance runner who’s so far ahead that he loses focus.

“Mark has a chance, but he needs to be prepared for any opportunities that come his way should Judd show weakness. But from 7-1, it’s tough.’

Williams tweeted after the session that he was struggling with conditions at the Crucible, which all four semifinalists apparently did on Thursday.

“Sorry about that performance,” Williams wrote. “Very tough conditions for me I’m afraid if we went on there it would easily be 17-1.”

Davis agreed that conditions in the Crucible were poor, saying the table wasn’t level making it extremely difficult for both men.

“It’s difficult to set up a table in a very short time,” he said. ‘ It dropped the standard of the game. It affects every shot – not just the pots.”

Williams and Trump continue on Friday morning, evening and Saturday afternoon.
