A British travel expert found hanged in a Doha hotel has told friends he was tortured by Qatar’s “secret police”.
Marc Bennett, 52, was found dead at the city’s Curve Hotel on Christmas Day 2019 after telling friends he had been arrested.
He was reported to authorities in 2019 over allegations that he had sent “highly confidential documents” to an external email address following his appointment as Discover Qatar’s senior vice president.
After resigning from his position, Mr Bennett was arrested at the Qatar Airways office, where he was handcuffed and blindfolded before being taken to a detention centre.
He was released three weeks later after being subjected to torture techniques, including being stripped of his clothes, banged against walls and hosed down.
Mr Bennett was also left in “legal limbo”, not knowing if charges would be brought against him or if he would be arrested again.
The night before his death, he was “laughing and joking” on a video call with his family, and he left no suicide note for loved ones.
In her first interview after her husband’s death, his wife Nancy told the Times: “There are so many questions.
‘He left here with the whole world before him.’
United Nations lawyers said allegations of poor treatment of Mr Bennett were “credible”, The Times reported.
Although his death was ruled a suicide, a British coroner said Mr Bennett had shown “no concrete evidence of suicidal intent”.
He added: “The circumstances of the months leading up to his death remain unclear.”
A week after Prime Minister Liz Truss became Secretary of State, Mr. Bennett’s case was closed.
A month later, Ms Truss visited Qatar and said she wanted to launch a “strategic dialogue” between the two countries with more cooperation on “security, development, trade and investment”.
Mr. Bennett has been appointed Senior Vice President of Discover Qatar to boost the country’s tourism industry ahead of the World Cup.
Qatar Airways told The Times they reported Mr Bennett to the police after discovering he had sent “highly confidential documents” to a private email address.
The Foreign Office said they helped Mr Bennett’s family after his death.
