The 21-year-old had been a priority target for Erik ten Hag following his appointment to the club and Antony had shown his willingness to follow him to Old Trafford.
The Brazil international thrived in his two years with the Dutchman under Ten Hag and United’s defeats by Brentford and Brighton have underscored their weakness in attack.
Those defeats have left Antony questioning whether a move to Old Trafford would be to his advantage at this stage in his career, but he would struggle to turn the club down provided a fee can be agreed.
And SkySports claim United will now test Ajax’s determination to keep the Brazilian by submitting a new offer for the winger this week.
Ajax had previously tried to thwart United’s interest by raising his asking price to around £67m.
United felt this was too high a price but the club’s disastrous start to the season means they may now have to pay the Dutch club’s valuation.
Ajax have already sold a number of players this summer, including Lisandro Martinez to United.
But they would reluctantly allow Antony to leave should they receive a bid in the region of £67million.
Sky say a “massive offer” will be made to the club this week, but it remains to be seen if that meets Ajax’s asking price.
United’s net spending is just £50m this summer following the arrivals of Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia.
The club have lost the likes of Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard, while the squad have taken a 25% pay cut for not qualifying for the Champions League.
