United’s miserable season ended in another defeat as they were beaten 1-0 by Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Erik ten Hag, who started work at United last week, is now tasked with a major summer makeover to get the club back on track.
The former Ajax boss will also try to restore order to a broken dressing room as many players under Ralf Rangnick have struggled to show signs of improvement.
Fernandes’ form this season was one of many issues Rangnick was unable to resolve during his time at Old Trafford and according to the Manchester Evening News, members of the United squad see the midfielder’s inconsistent distribution during games as ‘a problem’ .
The Portugal international has scored 10 goals and recorded six assists in the Premier League this season – a significant drop from the 18 goals and 12 assists during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure last season.
The report also highlights dissatisfaction between the players in the United dressing room, with a member of the squad allegedly claiming captain Harry Maguire is “not good enough”.
It is also claimed some United players can’t fathom the number of minutes Rangnick has given to 20-year-old winger Anthony Elanga, who has scored twice and provided two assists in 21 Premier League games this season.
Elsewhere, it has emerged that Rangnick has questioned United’s hierarchy on transfer strategy, including their failure to replace Nemanja Matic and their decision to spend around £90m on Amad Diallo, Facundo Pellistri and Donny van de Beek .
Meanwhile, United have already decided they are open to offers for Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the right-back is not part of Erik ten Hag’s plans for next season.
