Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand is backing Manchester City to win the Premier League title for a third straight season next season – although he’s not entirely convinced Erling Haaland will be a surefire success at the Etihad.
Pep Guardiola’s side fell by two goals in six exciting minutes and defeated Aston Villa 3-2 on Sunday to retain their title in dramatic circumstances, with Liverpool finishing just a single point adrift of second place.
Both sides will be even stronger next season – City have already struck a deal for Erling Haaland and Liverpool are eyeing Aurelien Tchouameni – while the pursuers hope to close the gap.
Chelsea’s takeover should be completed in time to strengthen the squad; Antonio Conte will demand significant funds at Tottenham; Arsenal will look to build on a promising season despite finishing fifth; United have fresh optimism under Erik ten Hag; and perhaps even spend-hungry Newcastle could come into play.
But Ferdinand still thinks Manchester City are the team to beat and has backed them to emerge victorious again in the 2022/23 season, despite being full of praise for Jurgen Klopp’s work in Liverpool was.
Asked for an early prediction of who will win the title next season, Ferdinand said of his Vibe with FIVE YouTube show: ‘It depends on Man United recruitment. jokes! No no no.
“Listen, I said earlier this season that Chelsea would win it after they won the Champions League and what Tuchel did, but they went backwards.
“I will choose City. I think they will get the three in a row they are looking for. I think that will happen.
“But I think what Klopp did was just remarkable to come in and change this club. Where they’ve been is pretty much how United are now.
“Well, if Ten Hag can come in and do whatever he wants [Klopp] done, we shall regard him as the Messiah. So I think it’s only right that we do that with Klopp.’
City have already signed Haaland from Borussia Dortmund to add even more firepower to his powerful attack, although Ferdinand has hinted the powerful Norwegian frontman could struggle to adapt to Guardiola’s style of play.
He explained: “I think there’s a tactical element to this that I can’t wait to see unfold. How does Haaland fit into this team?
“Because usually their number nine, which they’ve had for the last season or two, usually shows up. When Ilkay Gündogan was playing up there, he fell in midfield, creating an overload in midfield where they dominate teams all the time and overwhelm you with extra players.
“Haaland doesn’t get on his feet like that, Haaland wants the ball in and around the box or behind the other team so he can run on it. I want to see how Pep handles it.
