Liverpool had been heavily linked with a move for Tchouameni but according to Andy Mitten, Rangnick insisted United move for the France international.
The German has been critical of United’s transfer strategy, saying the club could sign up to ten players this summer before leaving.
Rangnick was set to work as an advisor for the club, helping the United board find new players and providing advice on transfer strategy.
United have yet to make a signing this summer, with the club focused on signing Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong before moving on to new targets.
The La Liga giants are ready to sell the Dutchman but they are looking around £72m for the midfielder.
Jurrien Timber, Antony and Pau Torres are all other targets, while calls are made to James Garner, Amad Diallo and Anthony Martial.
