Rudiger is in the final six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge and will not make a decision on his future until the end of the season.
The Germany international has turned down an offer from the Blues with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also among those interested in luring him away from west London.
Mirror reports that United are also interested in the 28-year-old – with Ralf Rangnick being a huge admirer.
United’s interest in Rudiger could also ‘cast a dark shadow’ over Harry Maguire’s future, the report added.
While Rudiger is said to be on the lookout for a £400,000-a-week deal, United know it could pay more to bring in someone of Rudiger’s caliber if they want to make a big change at the back. later this summer.
Maguire has endured a difficult season at Old Trafford, where his role as club captain is said to have been reduced in the United dressing room.
Ralf Rangnick has been persistent and publicly supportive of the England international, however, with former United defender Gary Pallister confident he will find his best form again.
“He’s going to want to be a part of getting Manchester United back to form and becoming a better team,” Pallister told Metro.co.uk.
‘He has the armband and the responsibility, so he will feel he has to lead and he can do that by being on the pitch.
‘I don’t think he’s the type of character to look for a cop like that, so he’s going to want to play through it.
‘It’s not supported by anyone and it can be seen as a sign of weakness if you don’t get hurt by being left out.
‘I’m 100% positive that he’ll want to fight his way through it.’
