The Ajax boss is the clear front-runner to take over at Old Trafford this summer after impressing in interviews with the club’s hierarchy, and the appointment could even be made official by the end of this month.
Ten Hag is already considering the makeup of his backroom staff and wants not only two of his Ajax coaches but also someone with United ties.
Countryman Van Persie – who was part of United’s last title-winners and spent three years at Manchester – quickly emerged as the most logical option to join the Ten Hag coaching staff.
The former Arsenal striker has worked at Feyenoord both as a first-team finishing coach and as assistant head coach of the club’s under-16 squad.
Both United and Ten Hag were keen to hire the 38-year-old but he will need a Governing Body Exemption (GBE) to work in the UK due to post-Brexit rules.
Van Persie’s lack of top-level coaching experience and qualifications is expected to work against him in the application process, and United have already had problems and delays in obtaining a GBE for Ralf Rangnick and manager Chris Armas – who far more experience than the Dutchman to have .
United still intend to explore the possibility of hiring Van Persie, although the English Football Association may not be able to grant a GBE.
Both the club and Ten Hag remain keen to have a member of the coaching staff with Premier League experience and United ties, with a list of alternative options ready to be explored.
Two of Sir Alex Ferguson’s old coaches – Steve McClaren and Rene Meulensteen – are both being considered; The former was manager at FC Twente when Ten Hag was on the coaching staff.
The Ajax boss is also said to have a will two of his current trainers in the form of assistant Mitchell van der Gaag and fitness trainer Alessandro Schoenmaker.
