The defending champions capitalized on Liverpool’s slip-up against Tottenham by beating Newcastle United 5-0 at the Etihad on Sunday, banishing their Champions League demons in the process after the heartbreaking character of their exit against Real Madrid was broken midweek.
With three games to go, City are now three points clear at the top of the table +4 goals over Liverpool and are strong favorites to retain their crown.
Asked how it feels to have regained control of the title race, Guardiola instead opted for a tangent about how much support he thinks Liverpool has received – from neutrals and the media – and even been dug up in the title race their lack of Premier League titles in recent years.
Asked how it feels when fans chant “campeones” and the media calls them champions-in-waiting, Guardiola told beIN SPORTS: “A week ago, even when we were up front, nobody [was saying that].
“Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone.
“Obviously because Liverpool have an incredible history in European competitions. Not in the Premier League because they’ve won one in 30 years.
“But that’s not a problem at all. The situation is what it is. We need to get nine points, maybe six at the moment, it depends on what will happen in the next two games in terms of goal difference.
Asked if he really thinks the whole nation wants Liverpool City to beat for the title, Guardiola continued: “Liverpool missed [Manchester] United are the most important teams in history in terms of titles, legacies, history, drama, for many, many things.
“But we’ve been there for 10, 11, 12 years and I know we get uncomfortable at times [for other people] but I do not care.
“If people want Liverpool to win more than we do, that’s not the problem, it’s normal. Maybe we sure have more supporters around the world and here in England [people] support Liverpool more than we do.
“But that’s not the question, the question is: today, before the game starts, people are cheering and supporting us more than ever at a home game because they know we can count on that, even if we’re out of the Champions League these players are eliminated.
“The support has been incredible and hopefully we can get here in the last game and have a chance to become champions.”
