Frenkie de Jong’s future is ‘always further away’ Barcelona with Erik ten Hag, who has told the Dutchman he will build his Manchester United side around him.
Ten Hag has made de Jong his top transfer target this summer, with United close to agreeing a deal with Barcelona for the Dutchman.
Marca report that United’s offer is €60m plus another €20m in surcharges which they are confident the La Liga club will accept.
Barcelona are under selling pressure to ease some of their own financial strains, while De Jong’s sacking will wipe his €40m annual payroll off the balance sheet.
United’s biggest obstacle was convincing de Jong to swap Camp Nou for Old Trafford, with the 25-year-old initially opposed to leaving Barcelona.
United are more confident of changing that, however, with the report in which ten Hag told his former Ajax midfielder that in Manchester “the whole game will revolve around him”.
After impressive performances for the Netherlands in June De Jong recently admitted that he feels more comfortable in the national team’s midfield than in his role at Barcelona.
Marca believe United are likely to offer him a role similar to the one he is playing for the Netherlands.
Following the departures of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba, ten Hag are keen to sign two midfielders this summer.
As well as de Jong, United are also interested in Chelsea star N’Golo Kante, with Chelsea ready to listen to offers for the Frenchman.
United are also considering a move for PSV Eindhoven star Ibrahima Sangare, who is believed to have a release clause of around £30million.
