Both Timber and De Ligt have been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as manager.
Ten Hag has enjoyed working with defenders at Ajax and is considering bringing the Dutch stars to United in his first transfer window.
While ties to De Ligt appear speculative, Manchester United believe they have a chance of signing Timber, who played 43 games under Ten Hag last season.
The 20-year-old has become a key member of the Ajax squad over the past two seasons and could play as a centre-back or right-back for United.
Asked about his Dutch team-mate on Monday, De Ligt said: “Jurrien Timber is really good. He’s done a fantastic job and has been fantastic for Ajax this season too, I can only be happy for him.”
Timber helped the Netherlands beat Belgium 4-1 in the Nations League on Friday, in a game that saw De Ligt start from the bench.
Asked about the competition with Timber, de Ligt added: “This is football, the manager decides who plays.”
Former Manchester United star at the weekend Daley Blind spoke about Timber’s future at Ajax, saying his team-mate is ‘wise enough to make his own decisions’.
“I don’t need to explain what a talent and player he is,” Blind said. ‘How important he is to us.
“What he shows from the start is unbelievable. As a teammate, I naturally hope that he will stay for another year. I can’t influence that. All I can say is that Ajax have to do their best to keep him.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United are becoming increasingly confident of striking a deal with Barcelona for Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Ten Hag has identified the Barca star as one of his top targets as he aims to help Old Trafford thrive again.
