Erik ten Hag will allow him Manchester United players have a chance to decide Harry Maguire’s fate and vote on the club’s captaincy.

The England centre-back inherited Ashley Young’s armband just six months after his arrival following a record £80million transfer from Leicester City.

Maguire initially impressed in the role and developed into a key ally for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the Norwegian was sacked last November.

The 29-year-old’s form took on a worrying state after the additions Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to undermine the defender’s authority in the dressing room.

Maguire lost his place in the starting XI in the final weeks of a torrid season that saw him abused by his own fans and the target of a sickening bomb threat.

According to The Sun, there’s no sense of rebellion in the air, but the chance of starting the Ten Hag era with a clean slate and a new skipper is enticing.

The Dutchman lets his protégés vote on their new skipper and a clear favorite is said to have already emerged in long-time goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Spain international, who joined United a decade ago, returned to his best form last season, winning the Players’ Player of the Year award for a string of outstanding performances.

Cristiano Roanldo, who is increasingly likely to stay at Old Trafford for another 12 months, is also in the running but De Gea is sure to win any vote among his teammates.

The 31-year-old became increasingly open towards the end of last season as United suffered embarrassing defeat after embarrassing defeat, even posing a crushing threat to any player who saw his future elsewhere than at United.

After losing at Crystal Palace on the last day of the game, he said: “The best thing that happened today is that the season is over,” said De Gea.

‘I can not wait [to work with Ten Hag]. I’m looking forward to next season, a new coach and new players. Hopefully we can improve and put Manchester United in a better position. We have to trust in the future.”

“The new manager and staff are already looking for new players. Hopefully they bring good ones with good character. If you want to stay, stay in the club. If you don’t want to stay, leave. You don’t have to stay here.

“I want to forget about this season and be 100% ready and positive for next season. It was terrible, a very bad season in every way, it was very tough. It’s time to rest and prepare for next season.”
