Big changes to United’s squad are expected at Old Trafford this summer, with up to 10 players set to depart.
Officially unveiled by the club this week, new manager Erik ten Hag is said to be keen to have a centre-back, two midfielders and a versatile forward to start his rebuild at Manchester.
A host of clubs across Europe including Chelsea, Real Madrid are interested in signing the 24-year-old Nkunku, who was named Bundesliga Player of the Year in all competitions this season with 35 goals and 20 assists.
And United hope to secure his signature ahead of their rivals by making their opening bid next week.
RB Leipzig are reluctant to cash in this summer and could offer the France international a new deal that includes the incentive of a buy-out clause keeping him at the club for at least another year.
However, Nkunku is said to be “reluctant” to make new agreements with the German side.
While United appear ready to make their move, Nkunku hasn’t been on their radar for long.
According to reports earlier this season, interim boss Rangnick was left baffled after learning the club’s scouting department had not collected any data on the former Paris Saint-Germain youngster.
When Rangnick asked about the player and what sort of reports they had compiled on him, United’s recruitment team had no information and simply said he was “not on their list”.
A stunned Rangnick felt a club of United’s caliber should have full coverage of the Bundesliga’s best young player.
