At the weekend, former Dutch midfielder Rutten – who has managed a host of Eredivisie clubs including PSV, Vitesse and Feyenoord – revealed he was approached by his compatriot about a move to Old Trafford.
However, the 59-year-old turned down Ten Hag’s offer, saying he would rather stay in his native Netherlands to be close to his family – although he will return to PSV as Ruud van Nistelrooy’s number two.
“Erik ten Hag asked me to become his assistant at Manchester United, I said no,” Rutten told Dutch television. “Everyone makes their own decisions in life. I have a family, I have grandchildren that I want to see. I felt uncomfortable with this type of project.
“At Manchester United, you get on a train and you can’t get off. I want to feel comfortable in something you step into. That is the case with PSV. It’s nice to have grandkids that you see every now and then and play ball with.”
After the humiliating nature of United’s 4-0 defeat by Brighton on Saturday, Ferdinand was even more upset when he read Rutten’s comments a day later and is in disbelief at how the club is viewed now.
“We even read in the papers yesterday that PSV’s number two manager refused to come to Man United and become a manager. This is unheard of.
“We are in territory where we have never been before. There is a job coming up at Manchester United [in the past]there would be lines around the block for people to take the job!
“Now there are lines of people saying, ‘You know what, that might be a train you’re not getting on.’ It’s crazy.’
Ten Hag, who will take over Old Trafford once he finishes the Eredivisie season with Ajax, is expected to bring his current assistant Mitchell van der Gaag with him to Manchester.
However, he also wants a more experienced coach to be part of his backroom team – like Rutten – and has been linked with including the likes of Steve McClaren and Rene Meulensteen in his coaching setup.
