Manchester United “can’t wait any longer” for Frenkie de Jong to make his decision on a move to Old Trafford and are now ready to move on if he doesn’t commit to a move soon.

De Jong, 25, has been identified as a top target for United this summer as new manager Erik ten Hag is dying to see his former Ajax midfielder again.

The Dutchman is believed to prefer staying at Barcelona but the club remain under severe financial pressure and will need to sell before they can buy this summer.

Ten Hag is hoping to persuade De Jong to join Manchester and has assured him he will be a key player in their rebuild despite no Champions League football being offered next season.

But United are not ready to prolong the saga. According to SPORT, the club is now looking for a definitive answer and is giving De Jong an ultimatum.

If his answer is no, United will quickly move on to other destinations, with the midfield in dire need of a rebuild in the coming months.

United are said to be confident of agreeing a fee with Barcelona – despite recent reports claiming they are unwilling to pay £70m for the Netherlands international.

With Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba set to leave when their contracts expire next month, United’s midfield options for next season are Scott McTominay, Fred and 19-year-old Hannibal Mejbri.

James Garner will also return after Nottingham Forest’s Championship play-off final this weekend. However, United legend Paul Scholes believes the club should urgently try to increase those numbers this summer and supports the club’s pursuit of De Jong.

“I haven’t seen much of him at Barcelona, I have to admit, but I’ve seen him with Holland and he’s that type of player who can come in and control the pace of games. This manager needs support now, he was brought into the club to turn things around.”
