Rafael van der Vaart has urged Frenkie de Jong to join Manchester United, whom the Barcelona midfielder told a move to Old Trafford would be ‘ideal’.
Erik ten Hag is hoping to convince his former Ajax star to leave the Camp Nou this summer after offering him a key role in his United side.
De Jong initially wanted to stay at Barcelona, where he still has two years of contract.
But the Catalan giants are under pressure to raise funds this summer as Marca label United’s offer of €60m plus €20m in add-ons as ‘too important not to accept’.
While de Jong has concerns about United’s lack of Champions League football next season, former Real Madrid and Tottenham star van der Vaart believes United is right for him and insists the midfielder is “the only one.” of its kind” at Old Trafford.
“Of course that’s the ideal. Then you have a coach who knows exactly what you can and can’t do,” said Van der Vaart Ziggo sports, relative to ten hag. “And United still need some quality.”
“There are players who can do the same and maybe are better than you or have done more.
“As long as these other players are there, he is out of place at Barcelona. At United he could play more like the Dutch national team. Then he is the only one of his kind.”
According to reports in Spain, De Jong’s agent is set to travel to Spain in the next 48 hours to discuss the midfielder’s future at the club.
Ten Hag has made strengthening United’s midfield a priority this summer following the departures of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.
