Erik ten Hag is hoping to make his former Ajax defender Timber one of the first big additions to his Old Trafford squad.
The 20-year-old spent most of last season at centre-back but also occasionally played at right-back.
United hope to strengthen both positions this summer as the club are ready to hear offers for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is heavily linked with a Crystal Palace return.
While Timber is a priority, United have identified Carmo as a fallback option. According to the Manchester Evening News, the Premier League side have already held two rounds of talks with the 22-year-old Braga defender.
Carmo, called up to the Portugal side this week, was briefly linked with a move to Liverpool during the Reds’ defensive injury crisis in 2020-21.
Reports in Portugal have recently claimed Liverpool have reignited that interest with Jurgen Klopp as an admirer. Carmo reportedly has a £34million release clause in his contract.
Timber, meanwhile, has hinted he is undecided on leaving Ajax this summer.
“Of course I can develop further at Ajax – I’m 100 percent sure of that,” said Timber.
“I don’t feel like I’m done with the club. But I can also develop at other clubs
“I’m now concentrating on the upcoming international matches and then going on vacation. I still have a few things to think about. In the end my gut feeling decides.
“The picture has to be right. You can go to a big club. But if you don’t play there, it’s better to stay at Ajax. And Ajax is also a big club.”
