Paul Scholes then slammed Scott McTominay and Fred Manchester United slipped disappointingly in their Premier League opener against Brighton.
Erik ten Hag endured a nightmarish first competitive game as United manager as his Red Devils side were beaten 2-1 at Old Trafford.
Pascal Gross scored twice in nine minutes of the first half as Brighton took a commanding lead that resulted in the home side being booed at half-time.
United, who finished sixth last season, improved after the break but were unable to make a comeback despite Alexis Mac Allister’s unfortunate own goal.
It was Brighton’s first-ever victory at the Theater of Dreams and marked a sobering start to the Ten Hag era at Manchester United.
Scholes described United’s first-half performance as “shambolic” and was critical of midfield duo McTominay and Fred.
“It was a shocking start for Man United and the first half was really shambolic,” Scholes told Premier League Productions. “The signs were there from the first few minutes that it was going to be bad.
“McTominay was always trying to run with the ball, ridiculous. The quality in the middle of the pitch was really bad.
“I was glad he wasn’t sent off [for a high challenge] but I think he got lucky. Again he runs with the ball, absolutely ridiculous.
“It could easily have been a red card. The quality in midfield was nowhere near good enough, but we’ve seen that in these two players in recent years.
‘With Fred and McTominay, he [Ten Hag] have to go with just one of them, but even one of them is probably too much.
“Fred is giving the ball away all the time and McTominay is constantly trying to run with the ball and then giving it away. Pass it on to your best players! It’s not that difficult. On a day like today that’s criminal.«
While it was a hugely disappointing afternoon for Manchester United, Brighton return home not only with three points but also with a historic win.
Goalscorer Gross said: “We can’t ask for more. Three points away from home against Manchester United. This is a big win for us today.
“I would like to score more goals against other teams, but always against Man United. I do not know why!
“We played really well. The game plan was really good and we stuck to it. We had our chances and were clinical in front of goal.”
Ten Hag will be desperate for a response from his side when Manchester United travel to Brentford next week while Brighton return against Newcastle United.
