Vinicius Junior scored a second-half winner as Madrid clinched a record-breaking 14th Champions League title in Paris on Saturday night.
Liverpool created a number of chances as they chased their seventh Champions League crown and third title of the season, but Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois produced a brilliant performance to thwart Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Reds threatened to secure a historic quadruple towards the end of the season, but Liverpool will have to settle for the FA Cup and EFL Cup after also falling short in the Premier League title race.
Neville admitted he was delighted to see Liverpool disappointed on the final day of the Premier League season and was just as happy after their Champions League final defeat.
Shortly after Real Madrid’s 1-0 win in the French capital, Neville took to social media: “It’s really normal to be happy tonight when you’re a United fan! I’m fucking ecstatic!’
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti praised his side after they secured another Champions League title following their La Liga win in Spain.
He said: “I can’t believe it. We had a fantastic season. We did really well.
“It was a difficult game and we suffered a lot, especially in the first half. In the end I think we deservedly won this competition. We are really happy. What can I say? I can’t say more.
“I’m a record man. I was lucky to come here last year and had a fantastic season. A fantastic club, a really good squad with a lot of quality and mental character.
“The season was great. I think we went through really difficult games. The fans helped us a lot in the last game. You helped us tonight. We are happy and they are happy.”
Meanwhile, former Premier League striker Chris Sutton believes Liverpool’s season should still be seen as a success but admits tonight’s defeat will hurt.
“It’s still been a great season for Liverpool, the whole journey,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“The FA Cup, the League Cup, yes they missed a brilliant side from Manchester City in the league and tonight they’re going to be ripped to the post.
“It’s going to feel even more sour because of the situation where their fans aren’t coming to the stadium.”
