Harry Maguire has defended Gareth Southgate after England’s disastrous Nations League campaign and believes the Three Lions can win World Championship.

After reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020 last summer, England are one of the favorites for this year’s tournament, which starts in November.

But their preparation for Qatar has gone horribly wrong so far as the national side failed to win any of their four Nations League games in June, culminating in a 4-0 defeat by Hungary at Molineux, England’s worst home defeat since 1928.

Southgate’s side looked tired and lackluster in their two defeats by Hungary and their draws by Italy and Germany, Harry Kane’s penalty against the latter being their only goal in those games.

Fans showed their anger towards the team and Southgate during and after the Molineux defeat with chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” and calling for the manager’s sacking.

Maguire, who was himself booed when he came on against Hungary, agrees their performance was terrible but says he will support his boss to the end.

“Gareth is the most successful England manager since Sir Alf Ramsey in 1966,” said the Manchester United captain SunSport.

“We all can’t wait to work with him and the backroom team again at the World Cup. His leadership record is as good as anyone else in international football.

“There’s no reason why we can’t do really well and our aim is to improve on our previous tournaments and make the country proud.

“We earned more in the first three games, but against Hungary on Tuesday was unacceptable.

‘We all know that. Everyone needs a break and new strength now. Despite the results, the atmosphere in the camp was great.”

Southgate and others previously cited fatigue as a factor in their recent poor performances and the World Cup, which takes place during football season rather than the usual summertime window, could potentially benefit this England side.

Despite a poor season, centre-back Maguire is likely to fly to Qatar, where England meet Iran on the tournament’s opening day, followed by USA and Wales.
