Frenkie de Jong is in constant communication with Erik ten Hag Manchester United and Barcelona are reportedly yet to agree on the structure of a deal.
Ten Hag has made signing his former Ajax protégé his top transfer priority this summer and after weeks of negotiations, United thought they were on the verge of striking a deal for a fee of around £56million, in addition to various add-ons , which would take the total package to £75m.
But the two clubs still appear to be at odds over the structure of the deal, with Barca keen to receive a higher guaranteed fee up front.
Speaking on his twitch show Jijantes FC, Spanish journalist Gerard Romero revealed the Catalan club is enduring almost £64m upfront, on top of £10m in add-ons and bonuses.
That’s still around the same amount in terms of total spend, but Barca want to frontload the fee so they can start reinvesting the funds this summer.
Xavi has also made it clear to Barcelona’s hierarchy that he doesn’t want to approve the sale of De Jong until the club have agreed a deal for his replacement.
The Spaniard’s first choice is Manchester City playmaker Bernardo Silva and Barca president Joan Laporta actually met with the midfielder’s agent Jorge Mendes earlier this week.
However, Pep Guardiola would be extremely reluctant to sell the 27-year-old and is believed to have put a £70million price tag on the former Monaco man.
Meanwhile, De Jong is in a state of limbo unsure where he will be playing football next season.
After initially being reluctant to trade Camp Nou for Old Trafford, De Jong reportedly changed his mind after talks with Ten Hag and the two have been in daily contact since.
Although United unveiled their first signing of the summer on Tuesday, securing a £13m deal for Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia, the window has been largely a frustrating one for Ten Hag so far.
The Dutchman knows his squad needs a major overhaul and he was hoping to have more signings before the squad begins their pre-season tour at the end of the week.
While a deal for De Jong still has a few hurdles to overcome, free agent Christian Eriksen has verbally agreed a three-year deal with United and is expected to sign shortly.
