The Red Devils are looking for a new central midfielder in the transfer window following the departures of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
Kante, whose contract at Chelsea expires next year, would be a strong addition with his extensive Premier League experience and track record of winning trophies at Stamford Bridge.
However, according to The Athletic, United are concerned about the Frenchman’s injury woes, which saw him miss large chunks of last season.
On Friday, reports in Spain indicated that De Jong has agreed to a move from Barcelona to Old Trafford.
At 25, De Jong represents a wise signing for the future but the Dutchman will cost significantly more than 31-year-old Kante.
United have also been linked with Declan Rice but a deal for the West Ham captain seems unlikely as the Hammers want in excess of £100m.
New manager Erik ten Hag is keen to add to his squad this summer after United finished sixth last season and went without a trophy for the fifth consecutive year.
The former Ajax boss also wants a forward and a centre-back but will find it difficult to attract players to Old Trafford unless Champions League football is on offer.
United took a hit this week when it surfaced Liverpool were in advanced talks to sign Benfica centre-forward Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan was considered one of Ten Hag’s top targets after impressing with 26 goals in 28 league games last season.
The departure of Edinson Cavani has left United with only Cristiano Ronaldo at centre-forward, who at 37 will struggle to play over 40 games next season.
The Portuguese finished the season as the club’s top scorer but was often criticized for his lack of pressing.
