Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has promised the club will “fight to the last second” to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The Spain goalkeeper spoke to BBC Sport after United’s 3-2 win over Norwich City on Saturday.

A Cristiano Ronaldo double put the Red Devils under control at Old Trafford but goals from Kieran Dowell and Teemu Pukki evened things out for the Canaries.

With 14 minutes remaining, Ronaldo completed his hat-trick to secure the three points and avoid an embarrassing result against bottom Norwich.

The result puts United fifth in the table and just three points adrift of the top four, and with both Tottenham and Arsenal losing to Brighton and Hove Albion and Southampton respectively on Saturday, their chances of reaching next season’s Champions League are, nullified massive boost.

De Gea said: “Ronaldo scored three very important goals for us. We know we’re not playing very well, but we got three points. We should control the game at home against Norwich more.

“We know we’re not in our best moment. The most important thing is to win and we’re closer to the top four.

“A huge win for us. We still have a chance to finish in the top four and we have to fight for it. We will fight for the top 4 until the last second.”

With just six games left, United have put themselves in a good position to end the season on a strong note, but they will need to do their best as forthcoming games include visits to Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as a home game against Chelsea.

“The spirit is there. Everyone drops points up and down so we have a chance,’ added De Gea.

“It’s not enough to finish in the top four. We should control the game from the start and not give them chances. We give chances to every team, so we have to improve a lot.

“We’ll take the three points and we’ll see on Tuesday [away to Liverpool]. I hope this win gives us more confidence. We want to go there and try to win.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is a top player, he’s always trying to score goals and trying to be there for the team.”
