Gary Neville is “concerned” about this. Manchester United continue to fall behind their Premier League rivals after enduring a slow start to the summer transfer window.
While Manchester City and Liverpool have strengthened their respective squads with the signings of Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez, United have yet to dive into the market.
Ten Hag, who has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford following his decision to leave Dutch champions Ajax, is looking to strengthen his squad in several positions and will spend more than £100m on newcomers.
Manchester United have expressed interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and Ajax defender Jurrien Timber but both deals appear to have stalled.
Concerned about his former club’s inactivity, Neville says signing deals later in the transfer window will make it harder for Ten Hag to find success next season.
“I know early in the window but it’s worrying United are struggling to get business done,” the Old Trafford legend posted on Twitter.
“The others seem solid and ready but United can’t move. Erik ten Hag needs his group to form as soon as possible. Being late will only make it harder for him! Fingers crossed it happens soon!’
Manchester United endured a disappointing 2021-22 season under Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to finish sixth in the Premier League, 13 points adrift of the top-4 and 35 points behind champions Manchester City.
Last week United confirmed 11 first-team players had left Old Trafford after their contracts expired, with Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata being the high-profile departures.
At his first Manchester United press conference, Ten Hag confirmed United’s pre-season schedule would start on 27 June.
“First we’ll take a break,” said the 52-year-old. “We start pre-season on June 27th and I will have some information about the squad and each player.
“Not all players will come in [on 27 June]because those who play internationals will have a longer break because they play longer this ongoing season.
Asked if he expects to oversee an overhaul this summer, Ten Hag added: “At certain positions we want to refresh the squad, but like I said, that squad was second in the league a year ago.
“So there is potential and I’m really looking forward to working with the squad.”
Manchester United begin the 2022/23 Premier League season against Brighton on August 7 before taking on Brentford, Liverpool, Southampton and Leicester City ahead of early September.
