Bruno Fernandes admits he doesn’t know Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at Manchester United but says the striker deserves time and space to deal with his personal issues.

Ronaldo, who scored 24 goals in 38 games after his sensational return to Old Trafford last season, has not taken part in the club’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia due to a family issue.

Earlier this month, the Portuguese legend informed Manchester United of his desire to leave the club this summer.

Ronaldo is believed to be unhappy with what he sees as a lack of ambition at Old Trafford and wants to take part in next season’s Champions League.

The situation is far from easy, however, as United are adamant Ronaldo will not be sold and Erik ten Hag has claimed he can still extend his tenure at the club.

Ronaldo’s Portugal team-mate Fernandes admits the United side remain in the dark about the 37-year-old’s future and says the only contact they had was family matters.

“Obviously we have to respect everyone’s decision,” said Fernandes.

“I don’t know what Cristiano said to the club, the manager, I don’t know what’s going on inside him but we have to respect his space.

“He’s had some family issues from what we know, so we have to respect his space, give him some space and that’s it.

“Cristiano was our top scorer last season, he added goals to us but obviously it’s not up to me, it’s the club that has to make the decisions and Cristiano makes his own choices.

“Like I said, I don’t know what’s on his mind, if he wants to leave it’s just news. I didn’t ask her that.

“The only thing I asked Cristiano when he didn’t show up was if everything was ok with the family, he told me what was going on, that was it and nothing more.”

One person who claims to have been in regular contact with Ronaldo lately is TV personality Piers Morgan, who reckons the veteran striker will leave Manchester United in the coming weeks.

“I’ve had quite a bit of contact with him over the last week,” Morgan told talkSPORT. “In any case, I think it is highly unlikely that Cristiano Ronaldo will play another game for Manchester United.

“I just think he’s moved on. I won’t say what we said to each other, but like I said from the start, I don’t think Cristiano feels Manchester United share his ambitions.

“I think he feels like the signings they showed last season, where they ended up and a lack of Champions League football…

“If you are him and you are nearing the end of your career and you still want to win big trophies, you have to do a calculation. Will I do it if I stay at United?

“I think he thinks the club’s structure isn’t right from the top down. It’s not a reflection on the new manager [Erik ten Hag]he has a lot of respect for him but it just reflects exactly where United are right now.

“It’s up to him to say what he feels but if you ask me I don’t think he will stay at Manchester United. I think he might end up in a pretty surprising place.’
