Erik ten Hag was appointed as the new one The Manchester United manager ahead of Mauricio Pochettino for being ‘most closely linked to the club’s identity’.

After United missed a chance to land the Argentine in 2019 while he was in charge of Tottenham, United interviewed Pochettino earlier this year as part of their protracted search for a new permanent manager.

After three Eredivisie titles with Ajax and impressive performances in Europe, ten Hag has been confirmed as the man in charge, which was officially announced by the club this week.

Pochettino was thought to be the Dutchman’s closest rival for the job but United’s director of football John Murtough has explained that ten Hag was chosen after setting out his “long-term vision” with “clarity and confidence”.

Murtough stated that Ten Hag was the candidate who “most closely aligns with Manchester United’s identity and aspirations”, underscoring his commitment to attacking football and the development of young players.

“He showed passion, energy and enthusiasm for the challenge,” Murtough said at a meeting of the club’s fan forum, adding the former Ajax boss is a “proven winner”.

He also asked fans to show patience with the new boss as he tries to pull the club out of its current malaise.

United have endured a fifth consecutive season without a trophy in which they finished with the worst Premier League points tally of the Premier League era.

To oversee the rebuild, ten Hag has brought in Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren as his assistant coaches, with a number of behind-the-scenes changes made to overhaul their recruitment strategy.
