Manchester United CEO Richard Arnold met with some disgruntled fans of the club on Saturday to allay their growing discontent after a slow start to the transfer window.

The Red Devils appointed Erik ten Hag to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last month after giving up Ralf Rangnick, who was set to take up an adviser role once his transitional government was completed.

Ten Hag is said to have presented his list of primary transfer candidates during his interview for the job but is said to have already expressed frustration at a move, particularly for Frenkie de Jong, which is dragging on.

The 52-year-old has also been rejected by Jurrien Timber, who wants to remain at Ajax where he has guarantees of regular first-team football ahead of an upcoming World Cup, while United have been reluctant to embark on a bidding war for Liverpool’s new record signing Darwin Nunez.

A small number of supporters stood ready to stage a peaceful protest outside the home of Arnold, who recently replaced the hugely unpopular Ed Woodward.

The 51-year-old resolved a potentially explosive situation by instead agreeing to meet a group of fans at a local pub, where they spoke at length about the club’s owners, the right to continue protesting the Glazer family at Old Trafford , possible transfer targets and discussed the amount of funds made available to the new manager.

United have already seen an offer for De Jong rejected but are Hopefully a new improved offer closer to Barcelona’s €70m valuation will convince them to sell amid their own precarious financial situation.

“As a club we are doing everything we can to get the deal done,” Arnold was heard saying in footage leaked to Twitter.

“I’ve been trying for days to get it done, the money is there but there are things standing in the way that I can’t say.”

Arnold went on to criticize the scattergun transfer policy, which has seen United “burn away” over £1billion in new player talent since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement a decade ago.

Arnold was filmed saying: “We’ve spent £1billion on players, more than anyone else in Europe. I’m not thrilled with where we are and it’s not easy if we can sort ourselves out for the future. But what happened is we burned the fuck cash.

“You can’t go to our training ground and ask where the £1billion is because I don’t think we’ve done well with the money we’ve spent in the past. I’m not here to defend Joel Glazer, he can only speak for himself. I want to speak to you, you came here to voice your views and I respect that.

“We blew an enormous amount of money; The money that the manager and the director of football want is there for this summer. For the future, for investing in a new stadium and stuff like that, to get a £250m training ground – we have to do something. We have to attract investors.

“I need investors to do what I want with the club. No club can build a stadium without that, you either borrow the money or get investors. The money has to come from somewhere.

“They may not like our current owners, it’s not my fault, but if you want someone else to come in – they have to look and say ok, the fans love the club and love the team. “Last year was a nightmare, it was a bloody nightmare. I hated every game. There were the protests.’

Adding to the club’s transfer this summer, Arnold said: “Money doesn’t matter who we want. It’s when the manager wants him and when he’s done his homework on the player. It’s £100m or £200m? Should I buy the players? Doesn’t that ring?.
