Manchester United have confirmed Ralf Rangnick will not remain in his advisory role at the club.

Rangnick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as interim manager in December but failed to guide the club to a top-four finish in the Premier League, meaning they will miss out on Champions League football next season.

The 63-year-old had initially agreed to take on an advisory role from the summer to support the club with team and transfer strategy.

But after a job with the Austrian national team, Rangnick and United have now parted ways.

Rangnick is understood to have spoken to United’s new manager Erik ten Hag over the phone before leaving.

A statement from United said: “We would like to thank Ralf Rangnick for his service as interim manager over the past six months.

“By mutual agreement, Ralf will now concentrate exclusively on his new role as manager of the Austrian national team and will therefore not take on an advisory role at Old Trafford.

‘We wish Ralf the best of luck in this next chapter of his career.’

At his press conference with the Austrian national team on Sunday, Rangnick said: “In the last few days we have come to the conclusion that it is better for me and ultimately for Manchester United if I can fully concentrate on the job here. ‘

Rangnick will now manage Austria for the upcoming Nations League games as they face Croatia, Denmark and France in Group A1.
