Premier League clubs wary of repeating the mistake Arsenal made friends with Nicolas Pepe as they mooted a move for Benfica star Darwin Nunez.

Manchester United are interested in signing the 23-year-old striker, who scored 36 goals for his club last season – six of them in the Champions League.

Erik ten Hag is keen to sign another centre-forward to ease the pressure on Cristiano Ronaldo next season, while reports from Portugal say Liverpool have also made an offer.

However, Benfica reportedly value his valuable fortune at €100m (£85m) with United among the sides wary of parting with that kind of money.

According to i, a Premier League recruitment chief believes interested clubs have questions over whether Nunez can handle the physical intensity of the English top flight.

The situation has been compared somewhat to that of Arsenal striker Pepe, who joined the Gunners in a £72million deal from Lille in 2019.

The Ivorian struggled to live up to that price tag and failed to land a starting role in Mikel Arteta’s side after starting just five top-flight games last season.

“The kind of money being asked for him is huge and no club wants to do what Arsenal did to Nicolas Pepe by grossly overpaying someone because of the hype surrounding the number of clubs interested in him.” , said the source.

United have a summer budget of around £120m, which can be boosted by player sales.

However, with the club appearing to have committed to using a large chunk of it to sign Frenkie de Jong and a £70m fee has reportedly been agreed in Spain, United cannot afford another costly mistake.
