Alex Ferguson’s former manager Rene Meulensteen and ex-Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford have told it Paul Pogba leaves Old Trafford after Manchester United’s defeat by Everton.

Pogba was one of several United stars to disappoint at Goodison Park on Saturday as Everton boosted their hopes of survival with a surprise 1-0 win.

Anthony Gordon’s deflected goal in the first half was enough to separate the sides and hurt United’s chances of finishing in the top four and qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Pogba has had another disappointing season at Old Trafford and both Meulensteen and Beckford believe he should leave Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the season, claiming the Frenchman is ‘unfit for the Premier League’.

The world champions thrived at Juventus after leaving United in 2012 and has been a reliable performer for France in recent years, despite blowing hot and cold for the Red Devils.

“Players like Paul Pogba came to Manchester United for huge money,” Beckford told Stadium Astro.

“I’m one of his biggest fans because technically he’s one of the best in the world. I just don’t think he’s suited to Premier League football where the pace of the game is very fast and intense.

“A lot of money has been spent at United but in the wrong areas and on the wrong players and they need to look at that going forward.

“I think Pogba will leave [in the summer] and that will be the right decision because we have seen how good he is Juventus and with France – that’s the player I want to see but I don’t think we’ll see that at United. I think he will leave for those reasons.’

Asked if Pogba’s career at Old Trafford was a failure, former Manchester United manager Meulensteen added: “Failure is a big word but has Pogba lived up to expectations? I do not think so.

“He knew what the expectations were when he came back to fight for the Premier League and Champions League.

“Not everything clicked with the players around him or in the system, does he actually fit into the Premier League?

“What frustrated me a bit is that Paul never really voiced his commitment to United. He never got out of there and has said he will stay and bring United back to where they belong.

“There have always been issues with his future and that doesn’t sit well with the fans. It’s not just a player though, there are many more issues to be addressed before United can get back on track.

“Not really anything has happened to him or Manchester United since he came back. I think he will go now.’

United’s 1-0 defeat at Goodison has put them three points off the top four after playing more games than their two top four rivals Arsenal and Tottenham.

Asked if United can still achieve a top-four finish this season, interim manager Ralf Rangnick said: “It’s difficult – if we don’t win our own games there’s no point in hoping for good results from the other teams .”
