A Queensland man has been jailed for the “reprehensible” assault and torturing a woman for hours while he held her captive in a hotel room.
Trent Wayne Lawson, 38, of Hervey Bay, faced conviction in Brisbane District Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to assault, malicious damage, theft and torture.
Crown Prosecutor Farook Anoozer said NSW-born Lawson escalated attacks against the 48-year-old woman between September 21 and 23, 2021 at two hotels in central Brisbane.
“This was a protracted assault on the victim, who was being held virtually captive by the defendant in a hotel room. He punched and kneeled her,” Anoozer said.
“It only stopped when she worked up the courage to open the door and yell for help. The beating and kneeling lasted at least two hours. It wasn’t provoked.”
The victim suffered a fractured eye socket and required reconstructive surgery involving the insertion of a metal plate and two screws into her skull.
Lawson also forced her to provide online banking information and transfer $290 to his account, damaged her cell phone, and left the hotel room with all of her clothes and medication.
Anoozer said the court must return a strong personal deterrent verdict for Lawson because he is a mature man with a history of violence and committed his most recent offenses while on probation.
Lawson’s attorney said his client was abused during his childhood and became addicted to methamphetamine and heroin as a teenager.
