The body of a young man was pulled from the River Thames near Hampton Court.
A search was launched just after 4pm on Sunday after the swimmer – believed to be in his early 20s – ran into trouble in the water.
After a major police search using police helicopters and boats, his body was found around 10:30 p.m. last night.
Superintendent Richard Smith said: “Our thoughts go out to the young man who lost his life.
“Our officers worked incredibly hard with partner agencies, but despite a quick response, he couldn’t be saved.
“We recently witnessed another tragic incident in which a young boy died after entering the River Thames at Tagg’s Island. Unfortunately, I have to point out the dangers of the water once again.
“It may look tempting, but the danger and risk of losing lives are incredibly real. Please do not enter the water at any point.
“The consequences are enormous and we do not want more families to suffer such terrible news.”
