A viral TikTok showed a man in a Grinch costume threatening to bring a family to the end of the line after they called him for being late at an amusement park attraction. The video sparked an online debate about whether he was acting professionally or his family was bothering him.
The clip shows TikToker Kay (@hi.im..kay) with his family lining up to meet the Grinch at Seuss Land at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida. The video was posted on Sunday and by Thursday had more than 2.2 million views.
Grinch was seen talking to a coworker when Kay said, “But you’re late!” He said he was in “a company meeting” and then told the TikToker, “Stop talking, it’s not even your turn yet. Do you want to go to the end of the line? I can make that happen.”
TikToker said no. “What does two more hours sound like? Exactly, say thank you,” said the man. Compulsory TikToker, and Grinch says, “Nothing.” The kids can be heard laughing throughout the clip.
TikTok’s text overlay reads “Lesson learned..don’t tell Grinch again.”
In a later TikTok, Kay shared the conversation that took place when the family took a picture with the Grinch. Kay tells the Grinch that he must be very excited. According to the text overlay, Grinch says, “Can’t you say I’m excited? To be fair, I don’t hate Christmas; I hate everyone.”
“No, you hate Whos, you don’t hate people,” Kay said.
“Yeah, you try to work here all day,” replied the Grinch.
In the comments, some users called the Grinch “rude”.
“Don’t give up if you can’t take it back” you’re not joking and he was bluntly rude… you clearly had a bad day,’ wrote @tashwrigh_t.
“He shouldn’t be working there if he is mean to a mother in front of her children,” @chloemccald wrote. “There is a difference between being grumpy and frankly mean.”
Others say that he is just a character. Ok, this is why I hate TikTok. You all just dance on the bandwagon. It’s the Grinch, his personality is literally mean! Satirical, mean, cranky,” wrote @rickyz025.
Some commented that they would be “annoyed” if customers told them they were late. “I’ve always learned that if no one but you or your child is smiling, it’s usually not fun. I would be annoyed to be told ‘I’m late’, @rosepetalxxxxx wrote.
In a video posted Tuesday, Kay said “the guy was having a bad day” and that he threw the photo the family bought on the floor and tried to tear it up.
The Daily Dot has reached out to Kay and Universal Studios for comment.
