A man who ended up in the Thames after police fired a taser to arrest him has died.

Officers were called to Chelsea Bridge Road, west London, on Saturday afternoon after a man was reportedly armed with a screwdriver and shouted.

Scotland Yard said they challenged the man before the taser was fired, but this “did not allow officers to hold him safely” and he “subsequently entered the river”.

A rescue operation was launched and the man was taken to safety by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution before being rushed to hospital in critical condition.

In a statement on Sunday, the police watchdog said the man, aged in his early 40s, died in hospital and an independent investigation is ongoing.

The man’s family is being assisted by specialist officers and the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards will conduct an investigation, the Metropolitan Police said.

Steve Noonan, Director of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), said: “We have spoken to the man’s family to express our sincere condolences and to explain our involvement.

“Our sympathy goes out to them at this terrible time. Our independent investigation into the police actions at the bridge is ongoing and we have begun to collect and review evidence.’

The IOPC said: “We are investigating the contact by Metropolitan Police officers with a man on the Chelsea Bridge yesterday morning (Saturday) before he entered the Thames. He was then rescued from the water and taken to the hospital in critical condition. The man, in his early 40s, sadly died in hospital on Saturday night.

“We were notified by the Metropolitan Police on Saturday and dispatched investigators to the crime scene and police post office incident procedure to begin our investigation. According to initial information, officials were responding to reports of a disturbance when they met the man on the bridge. Tasers were used during the incident.

“Investigators have recovered police video footage worn on the body and preliminary reports have been obtained from the officers involved. The Taser used was also collected and is being analyzed. Investigators oversaw the forensic examination of the crime scene.”
