Burnley is in intensive talks with Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany on the Belgian who will become their next manager.

The Clarets are looking for a new permanent boss following their relegation from the Premier League under caretaker Mike Jackson.

The 36-year-old has become their main target and Burnley remain hopeful they can lure him back to England despite their return to the Championship, the Telegraph reports.

The four-time Premier League winner with Man City is currently in charge of Anderlecht, the club where he made his professional debut.

He first took over in the summer of 2019 when he became player-manager after leaving City, but quickly opted to just focus on playing that season before taking over as manager on a permanent basis in August 2020.

Kompany would face a big task at Turf Moor as the Clarets would return to the Championship in what appeared to be a dangerous position.

Club owners ALK Capital will have to make a huge loan repayment because of the relegation, which will likely be a similar fee to the £42million the club will receive in first-year parachute payments from the Premier League.

Their financial situation means they are likely to sell star players like Maxwel Cornet and Nick Pope, while nine players are out of contract, including influential defenders Ben Mee and James Tarkowski.

It will be a huge Championship rebuild job for anyone taking over Turf Moor and there may not be much money to do so.

One attraction for Kompany could be a return to the north-west of England, where he spent 11 years at Manchester City and raised his three children.

Other candidates for the job included Joey Barton and Wayne Rooney, but Kompany is now the clear leader.
