MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Florida. – A 30-year-old man from Southwest Miami-Dade has been charged with armed robbery and attempted murder after police said he put a smoke shop worker in a chokehold and made off with the store’s register.
Lazaro Cardenas entered Smokers Goods at 9891 SW 72nd St. in the Sunset District shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, according to a Miami-Dade Police Department arrest report.
The report said Cardenas “came in with a shirt wrapped around his hand, pointed in the direction of the victim, and demanded the money from the register.”
Police said the clerk refused and began a tug-of-war over the register.
According to the report, a fight ensued and Cardenas placed the employee in a choke hold, causing him to lose consciousness.
Cardenas began walking out of the store with the register, police wrote, but not before the clerk regained consciousness and attempted to stop him a second time.
Police said Cardenas dropped the register and again put the worker in a chokehold. This time he was able to free himself and run, screaming for help.
The report said Cardenas followed him, not only with the cash register but also with the victim’s phone.
Less than an hour later, officers found Cardenas, the register and the phone near the dumpster of a nearby IHOP and arrested him.
According to prison records, Cardenas was being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on $32,500 bail for the two charges.
